Your Guide To 3 Gorgeous Beach Vacation Destinations

Where to stay, when to go, what to pack, and activities to experience.

Mustique, West Indies

Mustique is the ultimate secluded island escape. Part of St. Vincent and the Grenadines in the Eastern Caribbean, this picturesque private island features crystal blue waters, gorgeous white-sand beaches and a relaxed tropical attitude. There’s a reason why so many A-list celebs like Mick Jagger have chosen to build their vacation houses in Mustique… Mustique is probably the one remaining Caribbean island free of hassle and hustle, no beggars, no beach or street vendors, no unemployment, no casinos, high rise hotels, night clubs, discos or golf courses …and a 20 mph speed limit for the few cars on the island.

It’s home to a maritime menagerie that includes several coral reefs, brightly colored fish and large sea turtles, who are happy to swim by your side as you snorkel or scuba dive. Enjoy the many walking trails, go horseback riding or take a jeep, motorcycle or mountain bike tour of the island.

Cotton House, Mustique

Any time of the year is wonderful in Mustique. There is no “out of season”, being far enough south to avoid hurricanes. Some of the best times to visit are the summer months of June, July & August when all the beautiful flora is in full bloom.

Cotton House, Mustique

Accommodations include The Cotton House (arguably the Caribbean’s most exclusive inn), the Firefly Guest House (which has a lively bar and is self-admittedly “not for the boring, pretentious or stuffy”) and a collection of private villas available for rental. Here’s some info about how to get there.

Weather: Mustique enjoys a warm climate, with an average temperature range of 75 to 85 degrees (24 to 29 c) throughout the year, so bring your shorts, bathing suit and flip-flops.

  1. Just what I needed to read! My boyfriend wants to take me on a trip and I’m supposed to figure out where… these suggestions are perfect. Now to pick one of the three… I’m thinking either Mustique or the DR, because they’re closer… Hmmm…

  2. After my aunt gave me the series of Greek mythology books as a birthday present, it became my childhood dream to visit the Minoan palace at Knossos! Have been a history geek all throughout middle-school. It’s always a good idea to variate between touring sights and lazying on the beach. So of these three my choices would be the Dominicana and Crete. Going to be in Europe for work next month, so might as well take a couple of days off to visit some Greek islands.

  3. I adore Mustique. It’s a gorgeous spot filled with gorgeous people.

  4. I think I will definitely be checking out Mustique! I haven’t been to that part of the island yet and I can see that there really is something special about that place. I love discovering beach destinations and this one is sure to be on my list. 😀

  5. I’m shooting in Mustique next week! I’ll see if we can stay or shoot at Cotton House. Looks incredible!

Firefly looks really fun! I’m going to see if I can convince one of my best friends who’s getting married to do her bachelorette there! It would be so perfect for that!

  7. I’ve simply GOT to plan a trip to one of these locations – ASAP!!

  8. I’ve stayed at Cotton House – it’s fabulous. Highly recommend it. Didn’t know about that city in Greece – looks interesting… same with the other resorts you mentioned. Good tips!

  9. Wow – Mustique looks incredible. Seems like a seriously stress-free and super-safe island, which I have been looking for. After getting mugged in Jamaica, I would much rather play it safe and vacation in Mustique or St Barths. I hadn’t heard of Mustique before, but I’m *definitely* going to go this year. 🙂

  10. I thought Mustique didn’t have casual / fun resorts. Thanks for letting me know about Firefly. I’m going to book a trip there ASAP. Looks amazingly fun and relaxing!
