We recently interviewed Mrs. Rowling on her life, her books and, of course, Harry Potter:

Urbanette Magazine: We’ve heard that with your first book, The Philosopher’s Stone, you had to use a typewriter to write the manuscript, is that true?

JK Rowling: That’s true. The first manuscript I had to do on a typewriter and then had to re-type the entire chapter if I changed a paragraph. Then I had to re-type the whole book all over again because it wasn’t double spaced.

Urbanette: I couldn’t imagine doing that. It must’ve taken a lot of time and effort to get the book just right. When did you come up with the idea for Harry Potter?

JK Rowling: In 1990, my then boyfriend and I decided to get a flat and move to Manchester together. We would flat hunt every once in awhile. One weekend after flat hunting, I took the train back to London on my own and the idea for Harry Potter fell into my head.

I had been writing since I was six, but I had never been as excited about an idea as I was for this book. Coincidentally, I didn’t have a pen and was too shy to ask anyone for one on the train, which frustrated me at the time, but when I look back at it was the best thing for me. It gave me the full four hours on the train to think up all the ideas for the book.

A scrawny, little black haired, bespectacled boy became more and more of a wizard to me. He became more real. I think if I might have slowed down on the ideas and began to write them down. I would’ve stifled some of those ideas. I began to write ‘Philosopher’s Stone’ that very evening. Although, the first couple of pages look nothing like the finished product.

Urbanette: How long did it take you to complete the novel?

JK Rowling: After I began to write “Philosopher’s Stone,” something horrible had happened. My mother died. She was only forty-five. Nine months afterwards, I desperately wanted to get away from everything and took a job in Portugal as an English teacher at a language institute. I took my manuscript with me in hopes of working on it while I was there. My feelings about Harry Potter’s parents’ death became more real to me, and more emotional.

In my first week in Portugal, I wrote my favorite chapter in Philosopher’s Stone – The Mirror of Erised. I had hoped that I would’ve been done with the book by the time I was back from Portugal, but I came back with something better, my daughter, Jessica. The marriage didn’t work out, but the best thing I had ever had came into my life.

Urbanette: Lorsque vous l'avez envoyé aux agents, est-ce qu'ils ont pris le manuscrit tout de suite ou est-ce que vous avez dû l'envoyer à plusieurs personnes ?

JK Rowling: Le premier agent auquel j'avais envoyé mes trois premiers chapitres avait renvoyé mon manuscrit si vite qu'il semblait qu'il l'avait renvoyé le jour même de son arrivée. Cependant, le deuxième agent a répondu et a demandé à voir le reste du manuscrit. C'était l'une des meilleures lettres que j'aie jamais vues et elle ne faisait que deux phrases.

Urbanette: Combien de temps a-t-il fallu à votre agent pour trouver quelqu'un pour publier votre livre ?

JK Rowling: Il a fallu un an à mon agent, Christopher, pour trouver un éditeur. Beaucoup d'entre eux l'ont refusé. Puis finalement en août 1996, Christopher m'a appelé pour me faire savoir qu'il avait une offre de Bloomsbury. Je n'en croyais pas mes oreilles. Après avoir raccroché, j'ai crié et bondi en l'air. Jessica, qui était assise dans sa chaise haute, dégustant son thé, avait l'air complètement effrayée. Et le reste, comme vous pouvez le deviner, appartient à l'histoire.

Urbanette: A votre avis, quel était le meilleur endroit pour écrire ?

JK Rowling: Ce n'est un secret pour personne que le meilleur endroit pour écrire, à mon avis, est dans un café. Vous n'avez pas à fabriquer le vôtre café, vous n'avez pas à vous sentir à l'isolement et si vous avez des blocages d'écrivains, vous pouvez vous lever et marcher jusqu'au prochain café tout en laissant à vos batteries le temps de se recharger et à votre cerveau de réfléchir. Le meilleur café d'écriture est suffisamment bondé pour que vous vous fondiez dans la masse, mais pas trop de monde pour que vous deviez partager une table avec quelqu'un d'autre.

Urbanette: Beaucoup de gens se demandent ce que sont les Squibs. Pourriez-vous expliquer?

JK Rowling: On m'a posé cette question à plusieurs reprises depuis son introduction en Chambre des Secrets. Les cracmols sont à l'opposé des sorciers nés de moldus. Ce sont des personnes non magiques nées d'un parent magique. Les cracmols sont rares, la magie est un gène dominant et résilient.

Urbanette: Avez-vous des conseils à donner aux personnes qui souhaitent également publier leur travail ?

JK Rowling: Tout d'abord, vous devez écrire quelque chose qu'un éditeur voudrait lire. Il n'en faut qu'un, mais cela peut prendre un certain temps pour les trouver. Ensuite, vous devez approcher l'éditeur, soit directement, soit je vous recommande de trouver un agent que vous pouvez aider à agir en votre nom. La meilleure façon de trouver des agents et des éditeurs est de consulter « L'Annuaire des écrivains et des artistes », qui est mis à jour chaque année. Alors attendez et priez. C'est ainsi que j'ai fait publier Harry Potter.
