Puerto Escondido est connue pour la vague géante « The Mexican Pipeline », également appelée « la destructrice de planches » et est l'une des dix meilleures Mecques du surf au monde. Il existe plusieurs écoles de surf parmi lesquelles choisir, le choix des locaux étant École de Surf Oasis. Ils ont été la première école de surf à Puerto Escondido, ils enseignent le surf et l'espagnol aux étrangers et sont dirigés par d'anciens surfeurs professionnels qui savent vraiment ce qu'ils font.

Contrairement à d'autres destinations (comme Hawaï, par exemple, qui n'offre de bonnes conditions de surf que six mois par an), Puerto Escondido offre d'excellentes conditions de surf toute l'année. Cela signifie que vous n'avez pas besoin d'adapter votre temps libre aux conditions de surf. Vous pouvez simplement vous attendre à ce qu’à votre arrivée, les vagues soient mauvaises, l’eau chaude et la ville active.
